2018 Most Endangered Historic Places Announced

Arkansas Historic Preservation Program - Friday, May 04, 2018

Preserve Arkansas has announced 2018’s list of Arkansas’s Most Endangered Places, which includes a rural cemetery, two historic African American churches, a commercial building central to the 1957 desegregation crisis of Central High School, an Italian prisoner of war camp, a rural railroad depot, a “Green Book” tourist home for African Americans and a Civil War-era home used as a hospital for wounded soldiers.

Arkansas’s Most Endangered Places Program was started in 1999 to raise awareness of the importance of Arkansas’s historic properties and the dangers they face. The list is updated each year to generate discussion and support for saving these places that matter to Arkansas.

The Arkansas’s Most Endangered Historic Places list highlights historically and architecturally significant properties throughout the state that are facing threats such as deterioration, neglect, insufficient funds, insensitive public policy, and inappropriate development. Preserve Arkansas solicited nominations from residents and organizations across Arkansas. To see the 2018 list, visit https://preservearkansas.org/most-endangered-2018/.
