Green Cemetery Listed on National Register of Historic Places

LITTLE ROCK—The Green Cemetery near Stephens in Ouachita County has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the country’s official list of historically significant properties.

The Green Cemetery, located west of County Road 1 near Stephens, contains burials dating to 1853.

“The Green family lived and farmed near the historic community of Seminary, which was located only a few miles to the northwest of the present community of Stephens,” according to the National Register nomination. “The Green Cemetery stands as the last record of this early prominent southern Ouachita county family and is an intact, cohesive example of late 19th century gravestones and burial traditions with no known burials or gravestones later than 1913.”

The AHPP is the Department of Arkansas Heritage agency responsible for identifying, evaluating, registering and preserving the state’s cultural resources. Other agencies are the Arkansas Arts Council, the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, the Old State House Museum, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, the Historic Arkansas Museum and the Arkansas State Archives.
