Pocahontas Barn Preservation Lecture and Tour

Arkansas Historic Preservation Program - Wednesday, March 06, 2019

Special Projects Historian Holly Hope of the Arkansas Department of Heritage will be presenting a barn preservation lecture at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Parish Hall, 4650 Engelberg Road, Pocahontas, at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. Following lunch at the church a tour of the nearby Engelberg Barns will be conducted. The event is co-sponsored by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program and Black River Technical College.

Rudy R. Christian of Christian & Son, LLC., will speak on “The Value of Stewardship,” which will include information on documenting barns, assessing their condition and proactive maintenance.

Mr. Christian, along with his wife Laura Christian, has worked as a conservation specialist in timber framing since 1982. The Christians have led restoration efforts around the world and offer instruction in the appropriate preservation of historic timber structures.

Following lunch, which will be provided by AHPP, participants will visit the historic Engelberg barns, where Christian will demonstrate preservation needs and maintenance priorities.

The Engelberg barns are 7/10 of a mile south of St. John on Engelberg Road. Participants will need to take personal cars and are encouraged to wear sturdy, mud-proof shoes.

To register for the workshop, or for more information, please contact Holly Hope by May 1 at
