NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
Survey & Documentation

Survey
The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program's survey historians travel
the state seeking historically significant properties. These surveys
are often conducted within the guidelines of historic contexts, which
include chronological, geographic, and thematic elements. One ongoing
survey, for example, is linked to minority activity between 1870 and
1930 in the seven counties bordering the Mississippi River in the
Arkansas Delta. Another focuses on roadside architecture and
attractions dating from 1910 through 1965.
Survey staff members photograph and record the physical
characteristics of historic and prehistoric sites around the state. The
information they gather is filed in the AHPP office and entered into a
computer database for future research, planning and analysis needs.
