The circle and/or sun motif is found scattered throughout rock art sites in Arkansas. This particular shelter appears to contain a higher concentration of these designs than others on the mountain. The concentric circles, spirals, and sun symbols are common Mississippian ceremonial designs which provide further evidence that these sites are late prehistoric or protohistoric in age. They also contribute to the idea that most of the rock art on the mountain is ceremonial or religious in nature. More intensive study could provide insights on the nature and extent of this ceremonialism which seems to be associated with Petit Jean Mountain.
