Q: What kind of educational resources does the AHPP offer for Arkansas students?

A:
  • The AHPP has a full-time K-12 educator who visits classrooms across the state to present a variety of educational programs, such Arkansas's Haunted History and Arkansas and the Civil War.
  • The AHPP has published a series of comprehensive lesson plans that focus on historic preservation and historic sites in Arkansas.
  • Each spring the AHPP hosts the Preserve Our Past Art and Essay Invitational, which invites fifth-grade students to submit an artwork or essay about a historic Arkansas site.
  • An activity trunk full of books, activities, posters and games relating to historic preservation and architecture is available for classrooms to borrow.

Q: How much do your programs and lesson plans cost?

A: All elements of the AHPP Education Program are free.

Q: Are there grants for classroom teachers and educators?

A: Yes. Each year the Department of Arkansas Heritage awards grants for projects relating to the Arkansas Heritage Month theme. Educators may apply for grants up to $5000 for field trips, special events, guest speakers, and the production of educational materials. Q: What age are your programs geared toward?

A: The free classroom presentations and lesson plans are appropriate for grades 4 and up.

Q: Do you offer professional development for educators?

A: Yes. Each summer the Department of Arkansas Heritage offers workshops to Arkansas's education co-ops. The AHPP can also present teacher workshops year-round by request.

Q: Are your programs just for schools?

A: No. The AHPP's Education Program is available to homeschool groups, scout troops, libraries, or anyone else with an interest in historic preservation and heritage education.
